As I come to the end of my work experience week and get ready to start my fifth season with West Brom Basketball Club, it feels like the perfect time to reflect on everything the club has done for me—both on and off the court.
When I first joined West Brom, I was nervous. I’d just started secondary school and was trying to find the right sport for me. Walking into my first session, it felt like everyone already knew what they were doing, and I had no idea how I was going to keep up. The training sessions were tough, especially that first year, and I found it really challenging. But as the season went on, I grew in confidence and started to believe in my ability. I didn’t play in any games that year, but I was proud of the progress I made.
In my second year, I was picked to play for the U13s YBL team. It was a bit of a mix—some players were new and some I already knew, so it took time to gel with the team. The training pushed me physically, and I found it hard at first, but it definitely got me in shape for the season. That year ended up being a great one for me. I played an important role on the team and felt like I really contributed.
We started strong and only lost 3 or 4 games all season, which got us into the playoffs. We kept the momentum going and made it all the way to the YBL U13s Finals. Even though we finished as runners-up, it was a massive achievement. At the club’s awards day, I wasn’t expecting to win anything—but when Coach started describing his choice for his favourite player, I realised he was talking about me. I was awarded Coach’s Player of the Year, and it remains one of my proudest moments.
My third year was all about hard work in the off-season. I trained as much as I could, hoping to earn a bigger role on the team. I made the U14 National League team, which felt like a big step up. That season, the team chemistry was amazing—one of the best groups I’ve ever been part of. We had a strong start, winning most of our games, but as the season went on, I started to lose confidence. I wasn’t performing the way I wanted to, which was tough. Still, looking back, I made great memories and friendships that I’ll never forget, even if the season didn’t go the way I’d hoped personally.
Then came my fourth—and favourite—year so far. I was nervous going into tryouts after not performing well the year before. I was aiming for the U16 National League team but was selected for the U15s YBL team instead, and I was still really happy with that. The early training sessions felt easier compared to the year before, and I was able to sharpen my skills and find my place in the team. That season, I really grew into my role as a point guard—someone who can read the game and make smart decisions.
We dominated the group stage and went unbeaten into the playoffs. Coach Jadan chose me as the starting point guard, which boosted my confidence massively. In the quarter-finals and semi-finals, I played key roles, and we made it all the way to the final without a single loss. Everyone was nervous before the big game—including me—but we pulled ahead and took the win. It was the perfect ending to an incredible season.
At awards day, I was hopeful I might win something—and I was honoured to be named Players’ Player of the Year, voted for by my teammates. That made it even more special.
Looking back, West Brom Basketball Club has had such a big impact on me. It’s more than just basketball—it’s a place where I’ve made friends, grown as a person, and been supported every step of the way. I’ve had brilliant coaches, unforgettable experiences, and learned so much. I’m excited for what’s next, and I know I’ll keep giving everything I’ve got to this club.
