This week, I’ve been doing my work experience with West Brom Basketball Club. It’s been a great opportunity where I’ve helped out with PE lessons, supported after-school basketball sessions, attended meetings, and even got the chance to meet our local MP. I’ve also spent time reflecting on my journey with the club over the past two years — and what a journey it’s been.
West Brom Basketball Club is honestly one of the best things I’ve ever been part of. I’ve made some of my closest friends here, and it’s helped me grow both as a player and a person. I first started playing with Coach Ziggy and the Under 14s. Back then, I didn’t have much experience or confidence. My skills were basic, and I didn’t really believe in myself on the court.
But with support from my coaches and teammates — and a lot of hard work — I got picked to play in my first game. It wasn’t because I had suddenly become amazing at scoring or dribbling. It was because of my defence. I gave it everything: diving for loose balls, putting pressure on opponents, being loud on defence. That effort earned me the Coach’s Player award for the U14 season, which meant a lot to me.
The next season, I moved up to the U15s with Coach Jayden. With a year of experience under my belt, I kept building on my defence and started focusing more on offence — especially my shooting. But it wasn’t just my game that improved. I became more confident both on and off the court. That’s one of the things I love most about this club: it teaches you life skills like communication, resilience, and leadership. These are things that go way beyond basketball.
By the end of that season, I was named captain of the U15s — a sign of how far I’d come. That team went on to have an unforgettable season. We went undefeated and won the YBL Championship. Winning my first trophy, getting that gold medal placed around my neck, lifting the trophy with my teammates — it all felt surreal. It’s a memory I’ll never forget.
I truly believe this club is so successful because of the support we get from the coaches. They don’t just teach you how to play; they help you grow as a person. West Brom is full of coaches who care about you on and off the court, and that’s what makes it such a special place
