Summer League Runners Up!

Last night our men were victorious in their Summer League Semi Final match up v Yardley Defenders before coming up short v Handsworth Trojans in the Final.

Going into their semi final match up West Brom were eager to avenge a seven point loss earlier in the campaign v Yardley. The team came out focused on running Coach Lewis’ defensive scheme to slow down Yardley’s big man who caused havoc inside during the previous meeting. Led by the defensive efforts of Dan Opoku the team were able to take control of the game in the first quarter and not look back. Solid team defence led to easy opportunities on offence. Sharp shooter Alan Wood came up big in the second quarter with eleven quick points, including three from down town, pushing the West Brom lead to 15 going in to half time (32-17). The second half saw a continued solid team effort on both ends of the floor, enough for West Brom to book their place into the final. Final score 56-31.

Scorers: Ezran 13, Dan 12, Chase 12, Alan 11, Liam 2, Dennis 2, Luke 2, Ziggy 2.

Going into the final West Brom knew they had their hands full versus a strong Trojans team led by Maxwell Morrison. Both teams began the game trading baskets, however Trojans were able to pull further and further away, taking a 33-17 lead into the half time break. Coming out of the half West Brom were able to play their most competitive quarter of the game, despite our best collective efforts Trojans still took the quarter 21-16. The fourth quarter was more of the same with Trojans picking up the win and the Summer League title.

Scorers: Liam 11, Ezran 11, Dan 9, Luke 6, Ziggy 2, Chase 2.

Despite a tough loss in the final, the team can only look at this Summer League as a positive, with the team getting better and better each week after a very slow start. The team now look ahead to the 2017/2018 season where they will be competing in the WMBL Premier Division. To finish the year the club will be hosting its third annual presentation evening on Tuesday 18th July, 6:00pm – 8:00pm, in the Green Room Theatre at George Salter Academy. The presentation will include individual and team awards for u15s, 17s, 19s, men and women as well as video highlights of all the teams in action. We will also be drawing prizes from our raffle and giving out important information for next season.
