Weekend Review: Upsets and Buzzer Beaters!

What a weekend it has been with our under 13s, 15s and both mens team competing in their respective leagues.

Up first the under 15s hosted Spartans Basketball Club on Friday in what was a competitive game. In the first half neither side was able to take firm control of the game, with the hosts leading by just one point going into the half time break. An improved defensive effort in the second half saw West Brom open up a five point lead heading into the final quarter. The hosts would not look back as they went on to earn a hard fought thirteen point win.

A busy Sunday started off with the under 13s in action, again hosting Spartans Basketball Club. Coach Camerons side continued their impressive form and were able to get back to wining ways with a solid all round game.

Both mens teams were in action to finish the weekends action with the undefeated division 2 team hosting Birmingham Blazers and the Prem team travelling to the undefeated Shropshire Warriors. In a surprising turn of events both undefeated streaks would come to an end.

The division 2 team would lose in heart breaking fashion by one point despite leading throughout the contest and leading by as many as 14 in the third quarter. ‘Poor free throw shooting and carless turn overs in the second half hurt us today, but ultimately when we take a lead we need to keep doing the things that got us the lead – running the floor hard, taking good shots. The loss hurts but I hope it’s a wake up call for everyone in the team about sticking to a game plan.’ Player/Coach Liam Sheridan following the loss.

In similar fashion the Prem team were able to knock off league leaders Shropshire Warriors in dramatic fashion. After the long journey the visitors came out strong opening up 30-21 first quarter lead. With the score tied at 61 this game would come down to the wire. With neither team prepared to give an inch Luke Hatfield would hit a huge three point shot to secure the win before the final buzzer. ‘This was our best performance of the season. A solid team effort with everyone buying in to our team philosophy. We were able to show a lot of mental toughnesses tonight which knew would be needed to come away with a win.’
