Week 2 saw another action packed weekend across the club with seven games played. Up first our under 13s made the trip to Wolverhampton SLAM and were able to continue their impressive start to the YBL season with a convincing win away from home.
Saturday afternoon saw our under 16s host Big Sky West Bromwich Albion. After a competitive first quarter the visitors took control of the game taking a 15 point lead into the halftime break. The second half saw more of the same as the visitors cruised to victory. Coach Maziko and his under 16s look to bounce back as they travel to Northampton next weekend to take on Northants Thunder.
In the final game of Saturday our under 18s were on the road to Coventry Tornadoes. Still missing some key players due to illness and licensing issues our under 18s were able to bounce back from last weekends tough loss and come away with a comfortable victory. Coach Preware and the under 18s host Birmingham Bears this Saturday in their first home game of the 23/24 season.
Sunday saw our under 14s, ladies, men premier and men’s division 1 teams in action at home.
Coach Lofters on U14s win against Shropshire Warriors: “West Brom U14s National League won 87 – 33 with a win lead by defence, the team forced turnovers that lead to constant fast break opportunities. The defensive charge was lead by guard Marquel Brown assigned with the toughest task of locking up a shifty Shropshire point guard, Marquel’s energy set the tone for a dominant performance. On the offensive side Rueben Miller converted on fast break scoring and perimeter shooting finishing with 19 points and the Win.”
In the second game of the day our women hosted Shrewsbury Storm. Bouncing back from last weekends disappointing loss the ladies were able to come away with a convincing 52-27 win. An inspired defensive performance from Nicola Vizor, set the tone for the team who were able to pull away in the second quarter after trading baskets during the first quarter. Continued defensive effort and calmer play on offence saw the ladies pull away further on their way to their first win of the season.
To finish the weekend our mens teams took to the court. Up first our Premier team hosted newly promoted Hanley Hustlers. Coach Rudge “The Prem team won 132-68. The team had an incredibly quick start winning the first Quarter 40-12. Great team shooting with four different scorers draining threes! All eleven players scored in this most comprehensive team victory.”
In the final game of the weekend our Division 1 side hosted Birmingham Mets. A 17 point first quarter outburst from Jules Lima saw us take a commanding 32-11 lead after the first quarter. A solid team performance the rest of the way saw the team come away with an impressive 86-54 victory.
